About Short+Sweet

Now entering its seventh year, Short+Sweet is the biggest festival of short theatre in the world. Held annually in Sydney, Melbourne and now Singapore, the festival has staged more than 1,000 plays, watched by over 18,000 people.

Featuring the best ten-minute plays written by local and international writers, Short+Sweet utilises the talents of both emerging and established directors, actors and technical personnel to produce some of the best theatre on the planet.

Short+Sweet starts with a call for submissions from playwrights and independent theatre companies. Assessors read the scripts and produce a shortlist. New and established directors select one play each, and fill that play's parts with actors they see at the Short+Sweet open auditions.

During the Singapore festival, Short+Sweet will present 40 different plays over a three-week period. The climax will be a Gala Final and Awards night, complete with a panel of highly respected industry judges (to be announced later).

Aims of Short+Sweet:

  1. To provide a creative, collaborative and professional environment for actors, writers and directors to create new high quality theatre that showcases their talents to the industry, and helps foster future employment opportunities.

  2. To allow theatre professionals to learn more about the craft of writing, directing and acting through the actual creation of new short theatre works.

  3. To encourage and inspire talented young theatre practitioners to achieve higher levels of artistic quality in their work both for Short+Sweet and beyond.

  4. To present high quality theatre at affordable prices, thereby developing new audiences for Singapore theatre.

  5. To encourage active participation in theatre through the actor's audition process, play writing competition and Independent Theatre Company submission program for actors, writers and directors at all levels of skill and experience and thus foster growth in theatre.

  6. To encourage people to write for the theatre and thus help foster new playwrights.
